Tomato Newsletter Nr. 146 - February 2012
It seems that many articles, whether they appear in publications addressed to CIOs or CFOs don’t pertain to just one or the other function. Instead they are interrelated. That’s the case for example with “leasing versus buying” and even with ”criteria corporates use to select banking partners”. Technology is invariably a key part of the equation. That’s why we’ve combined these articles under the headline FINANCE, BANKING AND IT.
What seems striking is how many articles address career and management issues, especially for IT. So we have added a regular section headlined CAREER AND MANAGEMENT. As usual, topics vary widely and all resonate with the concerns raised in outlooks for 2012 mentioned in last month’s newsletter.
Enjoy!

Corporate Payments via Mobile? Martin Schneiders Interview in “Der Treasurer”

Criteria Corporates Use to Select Banking Partners
Most corporates regularly evaluate their banking relationships with respect to credit rating. The latest survey conducted by the Payments Advisory Group among large European corporates inquired which criteria corporates use to select their banking partners and if credit ratings are considered a significant criterium.
The GTNews article “Is My Bank Still Looking Healthy?” reports the outcome of the survey. Results included for example:
- Most of the corporates regularly evaluate their banking relationships with respect to credit ratings.
- The majority of corporates changed their bank relationships recently and most of these changes were an increase in the number of banking relationships.
- The changed (lowered) credit ratings were not the main driver for these changes.
- The main reason for increasing the number of banking relationships is spreading risk by reducing dependency on the existing bank relationship(s).
- When selecting a bank the most important deciding factor for corporates is cost effectiveness, followed closely by a fitting scope of services, particularly in the cash management area.

Four Things Internal Auditors Require from CFOs
Internal auditors look to CFOs for leadership. Specifically, they look for four traits that will help them do the job well and forge a good working relationship with the CFO. In the blog “What Does Internal Audit Expect from the CFO?” Norman Marks lists the requirements as:
- Honesty: to build a relationship based on mutual trust
- Information and inclusion: so he understands what is happening within the organization and what issues are important to the company and its more significant risks.
- Support: He needs to be able to turn to the CFO when concerns are raised over the adequacy of internal controls and the management of risks. He further needs “assurance on governance, risk management, and internal control processes, along with recommendations that improve effectiveness.”
- A mentor: A CFO who can help him “navigate through and be effective in discussions with top management, including the CEO” and who can advise him on how to tackle sensitive issues.

Buy or Lease? Preparing for New Regulations
In a news release in August 2010, the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) and the U.S. Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) published “for public comment joint proposals to improve the financial reporting of lease contracts.”
The proposals, if adopted, will greatly improve the financial reporting information available to investors about the financial effects of lease contracts,” it read.
Details in the blog “Exposure Draft of IAS 17 Leases, a new approach to lease accounting“
In „Kaufen oder leasen?“ Lukas Marty and Thomas Wicki, KPMG, explain that some CFOs and CEOs are preparing for “what could amount to a seismic change in their numbers” while others are hoping the new standard may not come about.
In the January issue of Assure on pages 10 and 11, they explain what the new regulation would mean and how to prepare for it.

How One CIO Hires the Best IT Workers
As head of the department or as manager, you’ll have to hire some staff this year; and as employee with plans for a career move, you need to know what a CIO is looking for.
Many hiring managers make the mistake of overemphasizing industry experience and specific skills and other criteria that ultimately aren’t that crucial, suggests Meridith Levinson, a regular blogger at cio.com
The blog “How to Hire the Best IT Workrs: One CIO's Best Practices” on CIO.com offers what’s key for him.
Work Habits that Could End Your Career
Job security can’t be taken for granted so it’s best to abandon habits that can jeopardize even the best employee's job. In Yahoo!Finance, Alison Green put together a list of the ten riskiest behaviors. Her advice was tweeted more than 700 times, so it clearly is a message that many take to heart. The list includes:
- Playing online during the workday.
- Complaining about your boss.
- Not owning up to mistakes.
- Being preoccupied with whether something is your job or not.
- Getting angry at work.
- Letting work fall through the cracks.
- Doing only the basics and not anything more.
- Caring more about having friends at work than about doing a good job.
- Taking feedback badly.
- Hiding things such as an angry client, a missed deadline etc.
(Details to each of these behaviors...)
Leader versus Manager: What’s more Important
Leadership is clearly crucial in any business. However, much of the literature on leadership undermines the value of management. While leaders are portrayed as big-picture visionaries who affect positive change, managers are depicted as mere budgeters, organizers and controllers.
In a recent Harvard Business School newsletter various scholars discussed why both skills are equally needed for anyone in a leadership position. For example, HBS professor David Thomas suggests that "increasingly, the people who are the most effective are those who essentially are both managers and leaders."
The key is communication. Applying logic and appealing to people’s emotions and their sense of values is the most persuasive. The ability to simplify complex messages and to listen is also among the most important traits of a good leader/manager. In addition, leading by example is also important.

After Facebook filed to go public last week, the spotlight has not only been on Mark Zuckerberg but also on Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook’s COO.
Sandberg is a remarkable voice for women in business and society. She demonstrated it at the World Economic Forum in Davos last week for example where she urged women to “take responsibility for their careers and not blame men for holding them back.”
The article “The $1.6 Billion Woman, Staying on Message” in the New York Times characterizes her as “likeable and persuasive” with “a warm, disarming tone that sets her apart from many other executives, male or female.”
