Joachim Voith hält es für widersinnig, dass die Gesellschaft die Arbeit geringschätzt und die Freizeit hochhält. Er sammelte Daten aus 1.500 Biografien von 1.500 ganz normalen Menschen. 1. BEPS: Swiss Update on Taxes on Corporate Legal Entities

Swiss Federal Tax Administration reports in March 2025 news on BEPS (Base Erosion and Profit Shifting) in 4 languages DE FR IT EN

Pillar 2 concerns corporates with more than 750 million global sales.

Constituent entities of an MNE group may be liable for top-up tax and subject to various procedural obligations. All constituent entities of an enterprise group that belong to Switzerland for tax purposes are jointly and severally liable for the top-up tax attributed to them.

Teileinheiten eines multinationalen Konzerns können der Nachbesteuerung und verschiedenen Verfahrenspflichten unterliegen. Alle Teileinheiten eines Konzerns, die steuerlich zur Schweiz gehören, haften solidarisch für den Betrag der ihnen zugewiesenen Nachsteuer.

Rechtliche Einordnung: Betriebsstätten haben keine Rechtspersönlichkeit und können weder vor Gericht klagen noch betrieben werden. Für die direkte Bundessteuer bedeutet das Vorliegen einer Betriebsstätte eine wirtschaftliche Zugehörigkeit der natürlichen oder juristischen Person in der Schweiz, die keine persönliche Zugehörigkeit in der Schweiz ist.

2. Strong America, Weak Eurozone – Part II

We’ve previously tackled the widening gap between the European and American economies in our previous Tomato Catch-Up edition in March 2025. Since then, the tariffs debacle continues.

The US is essentially the most significant market for EU exports and the second-largest provider of EU imports. In 2023, the EU's goods trade surplus with the US was EUR 157 billion, according to Eurostat. The same year, the EU recorded a trade surplus in goods and the US a surplus in services.

3. Cloud and Digital Services: European Alternatives

Many European Corporates moved their cloud services to the US to Microsoft Azure or Amazon AWS. You may see the trade balances for services in the above picture: 109 Bio EUR in favour of the US.

For example, Tomato uses a US service for the Tomato newsletter. Over the last eight years we have seen a massive change in the country opening rate of our mainly European based readers (80% earlier down to 30% in 2025). 70% of Tomato News are now opened by a US server followed by middle European countries, even though 80% of our readers are European.

Why not use more European alternatives?

European Alternatives is a project that collects and analyzes European alternatives to digital services and products (German and English), such as cloud services and SaaS products. The cloud computing platforms category lists 12 alternatives: general-purpose cloud providers that offer managed services like managed databases, managed cluster, object storage, DNS, etc. in addition to virtual servers. 4. Countries with Top Global Innovation

According to a WIPO Report, Switzerland was the world’s most innovative country in the last 4 years. Combining scores on inputs (countries ‘spending on research innovation) with outputs (patents), the scores are scaled to GDP. Dollar-for-dollar, Switzerland outpaces far larger economies, such as China and the US.

Switzerland’s top position is due to the massive investments in research and development (3% of the GDP), two-thirds coming from the private sector. The country boasts the world’s leading research institutions, such as ETH Zurich and EPFL, which attract top foreign minds: 50% of Switzerland’s PhD students come from abroad. The goal of the educational system is to develop a highly qualified workforce that can turn new patents into products. 

In the GHR report below, Scandinavians and the Netherlands are in top 10 with Germany, US, Singapore, and South Korea. Whether one or ten, we at Tomato regard the best 10 countries as one.

China is the highest-ranking middle-income country in this year’s index, climbing to the 10th position. Turkey, Vietnam, and Indonesia also registered rapid advancements in the ranking.

5. Banken und Eigenkapital

  • Tiefe Eigenmittel begünstigen eine mögliche Bonus- und Risikokultur im Management und ziehen mögliche Hasardeure als Aktionäre an

6. Steuern Schweiz Entwicklung von 2010 bis 2024

Eine interaktive Steuerkarte der NZZ zeigt, wie unterschiedlich hoch die Steuern in den Schweizer Gemeinden sind. Bei der Berechnung der Steuerbelastung sind Haushaltstyp, Zivilstand und Wohnort zu berücksichtigen. Die Steuerbelastung variiert je nach Zivilstand des Einkommensbeziehers. Ausserdem können Sie auf der Karte angeben, welchen Anteil Sie und Ihr Ehepartner an Ihrem Gesamteinkommen haben.

7. Impact of Caring & Sharing on Happiness: 2025 Report

This year’s Happiness Report focuses on the impact of caring and sharing on people’s happiness. Like ‘mercy’ in Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice, caring is “twice-blessed” – it blesses those who give and those who receive. In this report, both effects are investigated: the benefits to the recipients of caring behavior and the benefits to those who care for others.

Scandinavians are top listed, while Costa Rica is no 6 and Mexico 10 as non-European countries. The USA, Canada and other countries in the English-speaking world are experiencing a general downward trend. Switzerland ranks 13, Germany ranks 22.

10. From the Desk of Tomato

Peter Bichsel, the master of short prose, dies aged 89

The well-known author gained notoriety primarily for his short stories, which demonstrated his unique, straightforward language and writing style. Despite writing few words, he always had a lot to say. Bichsel has been hailed as a great storyteller for about 60 years and was regarded as one of the most significant voices in Swiss writing, despite his rather limited body of work. He also showed himself to be an enthusiastic observer of Switzerland and became known for his sometimes-harsh criticism of his nation and his stance on philosophical and practical issues.

Switzerland has lost not only one of its most distinctive voices but also its most popular writer.
